Crownhill Methodist Church

A New Church for the 21st Century

Over 200 years of Methodist Worship
and witness in Crownhill, Plymouth

Our present building was built in 1871 for £450 plus £150 for the land.

However, there has been a chapel in Crownhill for over 40 years before that, and the first Methodists in the village (it was called Knackersknowle then) in the late 1700's had worshipped in private houses. A Sunday school was built in 1888, the extension on the east side was finished in 1906; in 1962 a new hall, kitchen and classroom were opened, and in 1975 the church itself was extended again (to its present appearance at the front). In the 1960's the minister then, The Rev. T. Lawrence Smith, said: "Buildings cannot spread the Good News of Jesus Christ.  Only people can do this...Yet the building in the right place can be a powerful asset". We believe this is still true 30 years later - we are still growing and building!
